Los Angeles County Launches Near-Real-Time Heat Illness Tracker
US · Published Jun 4, 2026
Los Angeles County has introduced a new Heat-Related Illness and Mortality Dashboard to provide near-real-time data on emergency room visits and deaths caused by extreme heat.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the dashboard updates weekly and breaks down data by age, geography, and race, highlighting vulnerable groups such as individuals over 65 and Black residents.

Why It's Important?

The new dashboard underscores the disproportionate impact of extreme heat on vulnerable populations, including older adults, Black residents, and those living in areas with limited access to cooling resources. Heat-related illnesses often exacerbate preexisting conditions such as heart, respiratory, and kidney diseases, leading to increased emergency room visits. The San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys are particularly at risk due to a combination of high temperatures and socioeconomic factors. Public health experts emphasize that heat-related illnesses are preventable with adequate resources and awareness.
